Long Arm Quilting

Ray's Silver Thimble offers three levels of quilting to fit your specific needs.

  • Tier 1 (Edge-to-Edge, Pantograph, or All over quilting
    • At this level, the quilting is one pattern, covering the quilt without regard to actual piecing; perfect for everyday use or utility quilts.
  • Tier 2 (Block by Block)
    • This level of quilting is based on the pattern of the quilt; several patterns can be used to accentuate the overall appearance of your quilt. Excellent for Heirloom quilts.
  • Tier 3 (Specialty, Stitch in the Ditch)
    • This level of quilting utilizes large-scale free motion, stippling, and the stitch in the ditch.

Batting

You can provide your own batting or you can choose from 3 levels of polyester batting or 100% cotton batting. Prices range per yard from $3.99 to $9.99 for cotton.

DMC FlossThread Selection

We use only high quality quilting threads with standard colors of white, ecru, and Black with many other colors, as well as variegated threads from which to choose.

Quilt Binding

Your quilt can be returned to you trimmed of excess backing and batting for you to apply binding yourself or we can attach it to the quilt for $15.00 and you can turn and hand sew in place. Or, we will attach and complete the binding by machine for $20.00. You must supply fabric for binding to insure a match to your quilt project.

Quilt Backing

You can also provide quilt backing if you have a specific fabric you want used. We also offer several colors of wide quilt backings (68" wide fabrics) to choose from, along with white and ecru muslin. (We are unable to use sheets as backing for quilts)

Preparing Your Quilt for Machine Quilting

  • Do not baste the layers of the quilt together. Each layer is loaded separately into the machine.
  • Clearly mark the top of your quilt. This will often determine the orientation of some quilting designs.
  • The backing and batting should be no less than 4 (four) inches larger than the top, on all sides. 6 (six) inches on top and bottom are preferred.
  • Remove all loose threads from the top, on the front and back. If threads become trapped between layers, they may show through the lighter colored fabrics.
  • Your top should be free of all embellishments until after quilting. This will prevent damage to your top and/or to the quiliting machine.
  • The top and backing should be pressed. all seams pressed to one side or open. This will help prevent unwanted wrinkles in the finished quilt.
